Three things I wanted to do for activities at Jubilee included: Trivial Pursuit gaming, sharing the vast movie collection, and forming a Barbershop Quartet. Everything is done except the completion of our quartet known as "Jubilation". We still need a Tenor!
John is a "Visiting Scholar" at UNM, consulting with the staff of the Regional Poison Center, and works on the psychology of the criminal poisoner out of his home office. Mary enjoys puttering in her garden. The dog "Patches" just enjoys chasing lizards, and greeting all the people walking by the house.
Where did you live before moving to Jubilee Los Lunas? Why did you move?
We lived in Kent, WA, a large town south of Seattle. Tom had spent his entire life living in the greater Seattle area, while Nelda was born and raised in Clovis, NM. After more than three decades of marriage living in the Northwest, both of us felt the need to move here for health reasons. New Mexico’s sunny, dry climate is ideal for each of us.
How did you hear about Jubilee?
We found Jubilee in a serendipitous fashion. While we were still working in the Northwest, we would dream about moving to the Albuquerque area after retirement. Eventually our dreaming turned into a plan, and we decided to buy some acreage in the greater Albuquerque area and build a home on it. While looking for property in Los Lunas, we stumbled upon Jubilee while searching online. We had not been looking for an active senior community, but we quickly learned that Jubilee was no “typical” senior community.
What do you like most about living in Jubilee?
Without question, we like the people living here, and we like the many activities that get us together with our neighbors in Jubilee. People here are from all walks of life, and that is one of the things that makes it so special.
If you have one, what is your favorite cultural thing to do in Los Lunas or Albuquerque?
We love taking Rail Runner trips to Santa Fe to learn more about the history of our state and its peoples. We also enjoy car trips to various archeological sites. Tom really enjoys his participation as a trombonist in a local county band.
If you have one, what is your favorite nature activity you do in and around Los Lunas?
Tom--as an amateur astronomer--obviously loves to look at the stars. He also loves to drive through the small farms--especially in the summer--and see the alfalfa, corn and other crops growing. After all, he is a farmer’s grandson and is married to a farmer’s daughter! He also loves the diverse geology in New Mexico, much of it in our own “backyard” volcano of El Cerro. Nelda loves learning the plants of this area. Both of us enjoy hiking around El Cerro as often as we can.
What are your favorite restaurants in Los Lunas or Albuquerque? What do you like about them?
We love Teofilo's here in Los Lunas and we love Gardunio's and the Church Street Cafe in Albuquerque. They all serve very good Mexican Food and that is why we like them so much. Starbuck's, too, is a favorite "restaurant." We think it has the very best brew in town!
What is your favorite Jubilee activity that is for homeowners only?
This is really hard to decide. We love the Jubilee dinners and potlucks, and the people we meet and greet there. We really enjoy the physical exercise classes, such as Body Attack and Tai Chi. As a Jubilee resident, with the availability of various exercise classes, there is plenty of opportunity to get into good physical shape.
